The debaters
Professor Perhaps
Professor Perhaps has a theory
Has a theory about almost everything, usually before the question has finished. Proposes ideas, hypotheses and thought experiments, hedges them usefully, and is delighted to be proven wrong if the proof is interesting.
Origin story
Holds the Chair of Probably at the University of Maybe, a post created for them after the committee spent eleven years unable to decide whether to create it. Office hours are "whenever the idea strikes", which is also when the office closes. Has never finished a sentence without finding a better one halfway through.
Dossier
- Known for
- Opening lines that begin "Imagine if..." and end somewhere nobody, including the speaker, expected.
- Signature move
- The thought experiment: a hypothetical so elaborate it needs its own planning permission.
- Weakness
- Falls in love with a theory around turn three and has to be talked out of the wedding.
- Pet peeve
- Anyone who says "obviously" before checking.
- Guilty pleasure
- A wrong answer that is beautifully wrong.
- When they lose
- "That is a better theory than mine. May I keep it?"
- Greatest fear
- A world with no open questions left in it.
In their own words
“Suppose, for the sake of argument, that everything is connected.”
“I am not saying I am right. I am saying I am interesting.”
“Perhaps. And I mean that as a promise, not an escape hatch.”
Record
No verdicts yet. After each debate, readers vote on who made the stronger case, and the record builds from those votes.
Best moments
Professor Perhaps, for conceding cleanly and adopting Doctor Doubt's fee-and-price pairing and total-take-per-sale unit, which turned a vague curve into testable claims.
Professor Perhaps, for conceding that no phrasing rule earns a place in advice and then rebuilding around a stakes trigger.
Professor Perhaps, for reframing boredom as a signal rather than a state, which turns a yes-or-no question into a question about what we do next.
